About This Design

The ruins of Carmichael House, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland were once home to the Carmichael family, a Scottish clan that is also considered a sept of the Clan Douglas, Clan MacDougall, Stewart of Appin, and Stewart of Galloway. The Carmichaels have been settled in the upper ward of the same name in Lanarkshire for almost years. Their name dates from when good Queen Margaret established one of her first six churches here and dedicated it to St. Michel. The district and its people became “of Caermichel” with the rise of surnames in the th century. This house was probably built between and for John, 3rd Earl of Hyndford. It has been roofless since about but is otherwise substantially intact in the form of an H plan country house. Photo by Jonathan Oldenbuck (Own work) [GFDL ( or CC BY-SA ( via Wikimedia Commons
