About This Design

Woodpecker () by William Morris is a vintage Victorian Era fine art Pre-Raphaelite textile tapestry garden pattern. From Ovid’s Metamorphoses referring to the legend of Picus, an ancient king of Italy who refused to be seduced by Circe. In revenge, he was turned into a woodpecker. Gothic script reads “I once a king and chief, now am the tree barks thief, ever twixt trunk and leaf, chasing the prey.’ A nature scene with a bird and a woodpecker sitting in an apple tree with blooming flowers and swirling acanthus leaves.
