More than one family estate in Scotland bears the name of Dunglass Castle. According to the Colquhoun Society’s website, the original lands of the family of Colquhoun were along the river Clyde at the village of Kilpatrick, where Unfridus de Kilpatrick had his holding, granted by the 3rd Earl of Lennox about . Unfridus de Kilpatrick has been modernised as Humphrey of Kilpatrick. He adopted the surname Colquhoun. Its pronunciation has led to some family members spelling the name Calhoun. The castle is thought to have been built about , and is known to have been the residence of Sir. John Colquhoun, Chamberlain of Scotland, from . The Colquhouns also had extensive history with Dumbarton Castle, where they served as governors, beginning with the above Sir John’s grandfather, Sir John Colquhoun, in . In the s, the British Mexican Petroleum Co. Ltd constructed an oil terminal to the east of the castle, leaving it surrounded by a massive industrial site. It is unavailable to the public.
