About This Design

The Zernike polynomials are orthogonal over the unit disc. Here we show the recursion formula which reveals a complex valued function of two real variables separated into angular and radial functions. The table shows elegant images of different terms in the series. As you move down, the order n increases. As you move to the right the angular frequency m increases. The first column features the terms where n – m = 0. The next column shows n – m = 2, and so on. This mugs honors Nobel Laureate Frits Zernike, inventor of phase contrast microscopy and features the postage stamp issued in his honor. Celebrate the beauty of mathematics and make an aesthetic statement with this unique mug. The design is open to allow you to personalize this item or place the design on another type of gift.
