About This Design

John Wesley Powell was director of the USGS from . USGS initiated a National Streamgaging Program in with training and gage installation on the Rio Grande River near Embudo, New Mexico. The initiative was part of the Irrigation Surveys under Director John Wesley Powell (adapted in part from Rabbitt, MC, , USGS Circular ). Circular and other history accessible at and The USGS operates and maintains approximately 7, stream gages. These stream gages provide long-term, accurate, and unbiased information about streamflow to meet the diverse needs of the US populace.
