About This Design

The Lions of the Sea are the oldest () and largest lineage of Babbs in the United States having first been located a fishing community by the name of “The Isles of Shoals” off the coast of modern-day Portsmouth, New Hampshire. An exact connection to England has not yet been established, but it is clear from early records that they are of English Descent. The head of this lineage is the legendary fishing master, sheriff, butcher and barkeep Phillip Babb of the Isles of Shoals. He was so larger that his name is still well known amongst the locals as they spin tales of him haunting the shores of his island to this very day. He was a Lion of his time, hence the name of the lineage. Their lineage is proven through DNA testing of a variety of descendants. The DNA tests have demonstrated a strong connection between its members, but as of , no matching DNA candidate has been found in England. The Coat of Arms used to represent this great house of Babbs is NOT historic, but a modern interpretation of what a crest for this family might look like. It draws upon the known trade of sailing/fishing of its earliest members and incorporates a lion to represent Phillip himself. Using mascots for each lineage helps everyone to remember which lineage they are a part of. If you desire to know to which lineage you belong, please reach out to me on
