The sea and the colorful boats, though, were the area’s distinctive opportunities. Between and , Van Gogh frequently visited Scheveningen, a fishing village and holiday spot on the North Sea adjacent to The Hague. As he painted the big fishing smacks that had washed up on the surrounding shore, Van Gogh imitated the Hague School painters Henrik Mesdag and Anton Mauve. His debut into maritime painting in June recalls both their iconography and Van Gogh’s own early excursions into this subject. In a letter on this seashore outing, he compares Les Saintes-Maries to Dutch seascape, noting that the main distinction is that Dutch seascape has more vivid hues.
